Paying with Wero, the app that replaced Payconiq

What Wero does, which Luxembourg banks offer it, what happened to Payconiq, and how to set it up.

If you used Payconiq to pay a friend back, settle a bill or pay in a shop, you now need Wero. Payconiq’s platform in Luxembourg closed on 30 September 2026 and Wero has taken its place.

What Wero does

Wero is a European payment app backed by banks. The money goes straight from your bank account. You can:

  • send money to friends and family with just their mobile number
  • pay bills and invoices by scanning the QR code on them
  • pay in shops and restaurants by scanning a QR code
  • pay online by choosing Wero at checkout

It works in Luxembourg and also in Belgium, France and Germany.

Which banks offer it

According to Wero, BGL BNP Paribas, BIL, POST, Raiffeisen and Spuerkeess offer Wero now. Banque de Luxembourg is due to follow in spring 2027. If your bank isn’t on the list, Wero’s site has a bank selector to check.

What happened to Payconiq

  • The Payconiq app stopped working after 30 September 2026.
  • Old Payconiq QR codes on invoices and in shops can still be scanned with the Wero app until the end of 2026.
  • Wero offers the same things as before (sending money, paying in shops and online, paying bills) and adds payments in other countries.

How to set it up

  1. Check that your bank offers Wero. Your bank will usually tell you when it’s ready for you.
  2. Download the Wero app.
  3. Link your bank account and follow the steps in the app.

Official instructions: wero-wallet.eu (Luxembourg) and the Wero help page on switching from Payconiq.

Run a business or an association? Wero’s business pages explain how to accept payments by QR code, at the till or online.
