Injured or orphaned wild animals, drop-off day and night

natur&ëmwelt wildlife rescue centre (Fleegestatioun fir wëll Déieren), Dudelange

What it offers

Luxembourg's rescue centre for wild animals in distress, run by natur&ëmwelt in Dudelange. It takes in sick and injured wild animals, birds as well as mammals such as hedgehogs, and young orphans. You can bring an animal to the centre or to one of its drop-off stations; the centre says drop-off is possible 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. Phone advice during opening hours.

Practical details

If you find a wild animal that seems to need help (a hedgehog, a bird, a fox, a young animal), the centre’s leaflet gives these first steps:

  • Stay calm and keep your distance. Watch the animal first, then phone the centre on +352 26 51 39 90 for advice. Don’t put yourself in danger from traffic or from the animal.
  • Only touch it if it really needs help. Protect yourself with thick gloves, or a towel for a bird’s beak and claws.
  • Don’t feed it or give it water, and never give it medicine. Don’t give milk to young animals.
  • Keep it calm: a dark, quiet place. Carry it in a closed box or crate with air holes.
  • Don’t take it home to look after it yourself. Bring it to the centre in Dudelange or to a drop-off station.
  • Young animals are often not orphans. Many parents leave their young alone and come back only to feed them, and a fledgling on the ground is often normal. If you’re not sure, ask the centre before you pick it up.

For a road accident with a wild animal, secure the spot, call the police on 113 and, if someone is hurt, 112. The police and the forest ranger deal with injured large animals.
